Leadership Dispute in ADC
The ruling came during the Nigerian election campaign. Presidential elections are set for January 16. Key rivals to President Bola Tinubu are Abubakar and former Anambra governor Peter Obi. High-ranking politicians joined ADC in 2025. They were frustrated by internal conflicts in the Popular Democratic Party (PDP). Abubakar, who served as Vice-President from 1999 to 2007, and former Senate President David Mark were among these notable figures.

David Mark became the interim party president. Nafiu Bala Gombe legally challenged this succession. Gombe argued the transition violated the law. Mark and others lacked official national convention nomination. Gombe claimed he should lead after the former ADC leader resigned in 2025.
ADC's Stance and Abubakar's Resolve
This is not the first court challenge to ADC leadership. In July, Judge Musa Liman upheld Mark's selection. This followed a suit by another former ADC member. Abubakar expressed concern over the new petition. He questioned why a new suit arose after a prior decision.
ADC stated the ruling by Judge Peter Lifu aimed to suppress opposition momentum. They called it a calculated attempt to weaken ADC and frustrateAbubakar's bid. ADC plans to appeal the decision to the Court of Appeal. At 79, Abubakar posted firmly on Facebook. He assured Nigerian supporters he would run. I participate in this competition. I will not withdraw,he wrote. He criticized the timing, noting it followed his Sokoto rally.
Electoral Status and Opposition Strength
Political parties frequently engage in internal court battles in Nigeria. However, the electoral commission published the final candidate list. Abubakar is on the ADC list, partnered with Rivers governor Rotimi Amaechi. ADC is seen as the strongest opposition force against Tinubu. Many influential politicians oppose the All Progressives Congress (APC). This legal fight risks creating uncertainty for ADC's hundreds of candidates.
Obi's Reaction and Democratic Plea
Peter Obi, running for a second time, expressed shock via X. He posted, „Do not undermine democracy.”At 65, he stressed the need for clarity three months before the election. Obi briefly joined ADC before leaving in early 2025. He argued that protecting opposition parties strengthens democracy in West Africa. Obi promised to ensure opposition parties thrive if elected. This complex situation demands analysis for Nigeria's democratic future.
