European Force to Hold First Ukraine Support Exercise in Poland
Exercise KoalicjaTests Rapid Deployment
The exercise, named „Koalicja”(Polish for coalition), will evaluate how quickly and efficiently multiple nations can deploy troops by land, sea, and air. This is not a NATO operation. American involvement remains limited. The central goal is to support the Ukrainian army, secure Ukrainian airspace, and restart economic activity in the Black Sea.

Leaders Emphasize Practical Readiness
UK Defence Minister Wes Streeting stressed that this is not a theoretical plan. It is a real force ready to help Ukraine once fighting stops. French General Armel Dirou, who will co-lead the maneuver with British Lieutenant General Tom Bateman, called the exercise a critical milestone. It demonstrates the MNF-U's ability to deploy immediately after hostilities end.
Turkey Leads Naval Simulation
Logistics show the largest contingent, 1,100 soldiers, comes from France. The UK sends 300 military personnel. Another 2,800 troops will engage in land and air operations near Nowa Deba. A naval simulation led by Turkey will start from Istanbul. It tests mine-clearing readiness in the Black Sea. Turkish troops will not join the land exercise in Poland.
Not a Peacekeeping Mission
Bateman clarified that the force is not a peacekeeping or ceasefire-monitoring mission. „It is not designed for offensive operations. Its purpose is to provide reassurance and support the regeneration of the Ukrainian army, strengthening its ability to deter and, if necessary, defend against future Russian aggression,”the British official stated.
Moscow Watches Closely
As the conflict has already exceeded the duration of World War I and approaches the five-year mark without a decisive breakthrough, Moscow watches these maneuvers closely. Although the exercise is presented as a readiness demonstration rather than a show of force, it risks irritating Russia. Russia shows little willingness to accept a peace agreement. Dirou emphasized that the goal is preparing how the mission will be deployed, overcoming logistical and cultural issues between the participating armies.
