Trump’s Global Headaches Intensify Weeks Before Crucial Congressional Elections

A New Diesel Deal with Russia

On Friday afternoon, the US president announced a new agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The deal involves supplying the United States with hundreds of thousands of tons of Russian diesel in the coming months. Rising energy prices, especially in agricultural states in the country’s heartland, have become a growing source of frustration for American voters, who rely heavily on diesel for farm equipment and transporting goods to market. Polls indicate these voters blame the war with Iran for their financial strain. Consequently, overall support for Trump, along with approval of his handling of the war and the national economy, has dropped sharply.

Promoting the Deal on Truth Social

Trump promoted the arrangement with Russia in a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, claiming it would bring „lower prices for Americans.” Simultaneously, he ordered the Treasury Department to lift American restrictions that had blocked the sale of Russian diesel on global markets. Just two days later, Trump returned to his social media site to praise a new agreement concerning an „energy ceasefire” between Russia and Ukraine. However, the reality proved far more nuanced. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he had received no prior notification of this understanding, although he noted his country would respect its terms. Russia, meanwhile, remained silent. On Sunday evening, it launched a new barrage of attacks against Ukrainian power plants.

Zelensky’s Response and Strained Relations

„It is clear Putin does not read Truth Social posts,” Zelensky remarked on Monday with a hint of irony. He added: „This winter, if Russia does not engage within the framework of an energy pause, we will respond.” The relationship between Trump and Zelensky has at times been turbulent during the former’s second term. The American president constantly oscillates between blaming Russia and blaming Ukraine for the continuation of a conflict he previously claimed would be easily resolved upon his return to power. In recent days, Zelensky has become the primary target of Trump’s fury, as Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil infrastructure have contributed to a global energy deficit.

Pressure on Ukraine to Change Leadership

On Saturday, Trump told White House reporters that it was time for Ukraine to choose a new president. Both the Financial Times and CNN reported that the United States had threatened to cut weapons sales and intelligence sharing with Ukraine if Zelensky did not halt attacks on Russian refineries. „Zelensky should really stop,” Trump asserted. Terry Haines, founder of the independent analysis group Pangaea Policy, commented to the BBC: „I believe the president has a ten-year public record of verbally attacking people who do not do exactly what he wants, exactly when and how he wants it.”

Premature Celebration of the Energy Pause

It now appears that Trump’s celebration of the „energy pause” followed a familiar pattern for this president: praising an agreement before it was finalized and formalized. In the past, for example, he prematurely announced ceasefires in the Middle East and broad peace deals. Whether due to the president’s impatience with the slow pace of diplomacy or a hardline negotiating tactic aimed at forcing treaty completion, the result has been triggering a scramble in which the world tries to understand what it all means and how to react. Reactions did not take long to emerge. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who has become a vocal critic of the president on the international stage, offered „strong support” for the energy pause but criticized the diesel deal, arguing it undermines peace and stability in Europe and helps Russia finance its „illegal and unjustified war against Ukraine.”

Domestic Backlash Over Russian Diesel Imports

In the United States, Trump’s announcement regarding diesel imports sparked similar concerns, even among members of his own party. Four Republican senators joined Democrats in a letter urging the president to „return immediately to the right path.” „Congress explicitly banned the import of Russian energy in 2022 to prevent American dollars from funding Putin’s brutal war against Ukraine,” the senators wrote in a statement released on Sunday.
