Flavio Bolsonaro lost the second round to President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva by over four million votes. Following the announcement, the Brazilian real dropped 12 percent against the US dollar in spot trading. Brazil's Supreme Court ordered Bolsonaro to surrender his regular and diplomatic passports to prevent his flight.
Escape Route and Political Claims
The family left Brazil at night, traveling overland to Argentina. The government of Javier Milei, a Trump ally, issued them visas. They then flew to Ecuador before arriving in Miami. Shortly after landing, Flavio Bolsonaro issued a statement declaring himself the „true elected president of Brazil.”He called the accusations a politically motivated witch hunt and urged the international community not to normalize the situation.
Party Response and Extradition
Bolsonaro's Liberal Party stated on Monday that it accepts the election result. Although a US-Brazil extradition treaty exists, it remains uncertain if Washington will hand him over. On Wednesday, Brazil's Supreme Court dismissed rumors of a search warrant for his residence.
Previous Precedent
His father, former President Jair Bolsonaro, followed a similar path to Florida after losing the 2022 election. Supporters there attempted to orchestrate a coup. Some in Brazil have requested his extradition. He later returned to Brazil and is now under house arrest.
